A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
