Senate Passes Measure to Disclose Epstein Documents

The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday quickly approved to a bill that will mandate the disclosure of investigative files associated with the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The administration gave in after an extended period of trying to block the joint action involving a scandal that has followed the president since his return to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Both Chambers

Senators proceeded by unanimous consent, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a individual voting process, accelerating the process. Just before, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a 427-1 tally.

The public have endured sufficient delay. Those affected have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer stated in a floor speech on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Uncover the facts. Allow openness to prevail.”

Future Action

This legislation next will be sent to Trump for his approval. He indicated on Monday that he would approve the bill.

Even though Trump has for months rejected the outcry over the government’s handling of the scandal as a “Democrat hoax”, he expressed his backing for the House bill over the past few days, and stated he would sign the measure if it reaches his desk.

Reaction

The Democratic party, along with survivors of Epstein and their representatives who were watching from a House gallery, applauded after the bill was approved. The only opposition came from a GOP representative, who said he feared the measure would make public identifying details of people, potential suspects and others implicated in the investigation.
