The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a profound examination about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story commences when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that arise in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
